Last week we had the privilege of inviting students to our offices and hangar space in support of The Learning Partnership’s national Take Our Kids to Work Day initiative!
Take Our Kids to Work Day is an experiential learning opportunity for Grade 9 students, offering the chance to witness the world of work firsthand, prompt early career planning, and learn about a variety of careers and industries. The annual event was developed to give businesses an opportunity to share knowledge and advice around education, career choices, and relevant skills, and to give students the chance to discover a range of career possibilities. We were proud to open our doors to allow students to explore the world of aviation!
The day began with introductions and an overview of Air Georgian. This was followed with a tour and overview of a few departments, including Maintenance, Flight Operations, In-Flight, Supply Chain, Tech Records, Quality Assurance, SOCC, and Corporate Safety. Also scheduled was a tour of our hangar and two of our aircraft, an evacuation demonstration from our In-Flight Manager, and a mock safety investigation for the students to solve!
Our Maintenance Production Manager Jason Flear had two daughters at the event. Katie Flear shared that she is “fascinated by flying and being in the air,” and is interested in becoming a pilot one day! Her favourite part of the day was “getting to sit in the cockpit and work the controls.”
Sara Flear on the other hand can see herself joining our In-Flight department, as she finds the travel aspect of aviation the most interesting. Sara enjoyed being in the aircraft and learning about the different roles of the flight attendant.
The Flear family is a great example of the variety of pathways available to those interested in aviation!
CRJ Captain Asif Khan’s son, Abdullah, wants to follow in his father’s footsteps. He enjoyed learning more about aviation as he aspires to be a pilot. Abdullah’s favourite part of the day was having the opportunity to sit in the flight deck with Chief Pilot Tim Crits. After leaving for the day Asif let us know that his son had a very enjoyable experience, and “already wants to join Air Georgian!”
Another aspiring pilot was Jacob, our Manager, Facilities Cabin & Ramp Environment Liz Lindemulder’s son, who is considering a career as a pilot in the military. The best part of the day for Jacob was also learning more about what’s in the flight deck!
Our MOC Coordinator Ravinder Rathore had the opportunity to share the day with his daughter Siyona. Siyona enjoyed listening to the parents talk about their jobs and told us that she is interested in a career as an astronaut or something related to aerospace! Ravinder shared that once they got home, Siyona told him, “Dad, your company is small but full of good people, [which make a] good company and build great relationships. I am very happy for you.”
The day was packed with learning about the variety of diverse departments and roles within the industry. Our goal was to ensure each department provided a different perspective and background on the career paths available in aviation.
We were proud to open our doors to support The Learning Partnership in helping students explore the world of work. Take Our Kids to Work day was an incredible opportunity to inspire and connect with students who may help shape the future of aviation.
Thanks to all who took part!
